A group of Executives I work with got talking this week about the Belief Wheel. Somewhat by accident.

To be honest the session should have been on ‘Dealing with Difficult People’, but it was clear from the room that before we got down to the ‘How’ we needed to dig into a more pertinent challenge.

What goes on in our mind?

As I started talking about what goes on in their mind, they started giving me odd looks. Understandable, considering they thought they had come to ‘Business Ninja’ school.

The whole group had that “This isn’t what we signed up for...?” look on their face.

We started out by talking about self-fulfilling prophecy,

The concept that what you believe tends to be what you manifest and make happen.

I asked them to draw a circle on a blank sheet of paper. At the top of the circle, I asked them to write “Belief”. I then asked them to imagine our circle as a clock-face.

In the 3 o’clock position write “Judgement”. At 6 o’clock write “Action”. At 9 o’clock write “Result”.

As we go around the Belief Wheel those beliefs in our subconscious mind lead to us making Judgements.

Those judgements lead to us making the decision to do something or do nothing. To take Action or not.

Those Actions that we decide to take will achieve some form of result.

Those Results, either positive or negative, will reinforce our Beliefs.

Our Beliefs shape our Judgements which drive our Actions and determine our Results.

Here’s an example.

You ask one of your Sales Team to start prospecting to larger organisations.

But they believe that the company is too big for you to do business with. Subconsciously they make the judgement that calling on them is going to be too hard. They decide to take no action based on that judgement; in fact, they do everything in their power to avoid doing anything that might resemble prospecting. The result being nothing. No connections. No conversations. No opportunities. No sales.

Et voila! This inaction reinforces their belief that larger organisations are too big to do business with.

These micro-decisions are being made throughout your business daily.

Did you know the average person makes 35,000 decisions a day?

Let’s say you enjoy 7 blissfully decision-free hours of sleep a day, that still means you are making 2,000 decisions per hour, that’s a decision every 2 seconds.

Many of those rapid-fire decisions are based on your beliefs.

What I am about to share with you might require you to change some beliefs you might hold dear.

You can take anything in your life, professional or personal, work it through the Belief Wheel and understand why it played out the way it did.

What was your Belief?

What Judgment did you make based on that Belief?

What Action did you decide upon because of that Judgement?

What Result did you experience as an outcome of that Action?

What Belief do you now hold?

What new Judgement have you made?

What Action are you taking therefore?

What result are you expecting as an outcome of your new Belief?

If you are struggling with something, either in business or in your personal life, try running it through the Belief Wheel.

See if you can change your Belief, create a new Judgement, that drives a productive Action, that leads to your desired Result.

You could work backwards from your desired Result, to define the Action you need to take, the Judgement you need to make, and the Belief you need to hold to achieve your desired result.
